Boston, MA, September 26, 2005 - At their 25th Anniversary
Celebration Luncheon, Women in Development of Greater Boston
held last week in Boston, the organization announced its 2005
Community Cornerstone Award winners. The 25 recipients are women,
who, over the last quarter century, have made outstanding contributions
to the Greater Boston community through their philanthropy and
commitment to development on behalf of a wide variety of non-profit
organizations.
"The Community Cornerstone Awards demonstrate how far
we have come in the field of development," said Betsy Kamborian,
President, Women in Development of Greater Boston. "It
is amazing to look at these women and the impact they have made
on their communities and on philanthropy in the last quarter
century."
Women in Development of Greater Boston's The 2005 Community
Cornerstone Award recipients are:
- Sara Andrews, Director of Development for Partners
HealthCare Systems, Inc.
- Joan Wallace-Benjamin, Ph.D. President and Chief
Executive Officer of The Home For Little Wanderers
- Doreen Bilezikian, Co-Founder of the Christmas Tree
Shops and Co-Director of the Bilezikian Family Foundation
- Beryl Bunker, Philanthropist and Retired Senior Executive
Vice President of John Hancock Advisors and is a member of
the advisory committee of On The Rise
- Joanne Koenig-Coste, Past Board Chair of the Alzheimer's
Association, Massachusetts Chapter and author of "Learning
to Speak Alzheimer's"
- Lyndia Downie, President of the Pine Street Inn and
a member of the Board of Directors for the Massachusetts Council
of Human Service Providers
- Barbara Duffy, Founder of MY TURN, a social service
agency providing support, education and employment to 14-21
year-old youth-in need
- Shirley French, Philanthropist and former Trustee
of Governor Dummer Academy
- Shanti Addison Fry, Founder and President of the
New England chapter of Families with Children from China
- Penelope Hare, Chair of the Development Committee
and past chair of the Board of Directors for Penikese Island
School
- Susan Jackson, Honorary Trustee for the Boston Children's
Museum and dedicated volunteer for dozens of organizations,
including the New England Aquarium, Museum of Science, Plimoth
Plantation, and Bryn Mawr College, for over sixty years.
- Joanne Jaxtimer, Senior Vice President and Director
of Corporate Affairs of Mellon Financial, responsible for
the Mellon Charitable Giving Program.
- Martha H. Jones, President and Executive Director
of the Celebrity Series of Boston and nationally recognized
leader in the performing arts presenting community
- Barbara Lee, Philanthropist and Founder of the Simmons
Institute for Leadership and Change
- Enith Levine & Nancy Schneider, Co-Founders of
Dress For Success, Boston
- Vivien Li, Executive Director of the Boston Harbor
Association, whose mission is to make the harbor "clean,
alive, and accessible"
- Clare McCully, Executive Director of the Newton Schools
Foundation, responsible for forming alliances with city officials,
community leaders and public school administration to advance
excellence in the Newton Public Schools
- Helaine Miller, Vice President of the Board of the
Albert Schweitzer Fellowship and chairs its development committee.
She also serves as an overseer of the Beth Israel Deaconess
Medical Center
- Ronna Miller, Board of Directors Member of Riverside
Community Care in Dedham, an organization which helps build
healthy communities through the delivery of innovative services,
early intervention services, and substance abuse treatments
- Gail Twersky Reimer, Founding Director of the Jewish
Women's Archive, dedicated to uncovering and chronicling and
transmitting the rich legacy of Jewish women in North America
- Loretta Ho Sherblom, Founder of the UU Urban Ministry's
Funderburg Scholars Program, helping make college a viable
option for youth from disadvantaged communities
- Sharon Silber, Creator of the Brian D. Silber Memorial
Fund at Massachusetts General Hospital in honor or her son
and supporting the MGH Spine Tumor Center, part of the hospital's
Cancer Center
- Wendy Allen Wheeler, First Chairman of the Board
of Directors at the Walnut School to lead its modern mission
of young artist education
- Sheila Widall, Professor of Aeronautics and Astronautics
and Engineering Systems at the Massachusetts Institute of
Technology and former Secretary of the United States Air Force,
the first woman to head a military service
- Ellen Williams, MD, Former President of the Board
of Directors for the West Suburban YMCA and a member of the
Department of Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital
"It is an honor to be among this prestigious cadre of
women leaders who have made such an impact on development in
their respective fields over the last quarter century,"
said Community Cornerstone Award recipient and event keynote
speaker, Joan Wallace-Benjamin, President and Chief Executive
Officer of The Home For Little Wanderers. "The field of
development has come along way and I applaud Women in Development
of Greater Boston for playing such an important role in paving
the way."
