Women in Development of Greater Boston

The Program Committee Presents:

"Trends in Medical Fundraising"

Read the summary from this program

Speakers: David Woodruff, Massachusetts General Hospital and Shelley Brown, Children's Hospital

This seminar focuses on the rapidly changing landscape of the healthcare industry and the resulting and emerging trends seen in medical fundraising. Two of Boston's major hospitals will be represented by the panelists: MGH and Children's Hospital. Special attention will be afforded to today's mandate for moving beyond the grateful patient model of development to a more expansive style of development involving multiple donors and collaboration partnerships. Examples of more recent innovations will be shared and discussed.

David Woodruff is the Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer for Development at MGH in Boston where he has worked since 2008. He oversees a staff of 120 and operations for the $1.5 billion Campaign for the Third Century of MGH Medicine. David draws on 27 years of fundraising experience, having also served as Chief Development Officer at the Harvard School of Public Health and in various development leadership positions at MIT spanning major gifts, campaign giving, international fundraising and corporate relations. David is an active volunteer in a number of small non-profit organizations, and holds degrees from MIT, Stanford and Babson College.

Shelley Brown is the Vice President of Operations of Children's Hospital where she has worked since 2004. A thirty-year development veteran, Shelley has held senior management positions in higher education (Brandeis University, Boston University, MIT) and consulted to many institutions, including Princeton, Radcliffe, Northeastern, Emerson, and Quality Education for Minorities Network. Shelley currently serves as vice president of AFP (New England chapter), chairing its education committee. She is active in Boston's theater community as a performer and as a member of the advisory council for the Apollinaire Theater Company. She served on the board of Temple Isaiah (Lexington), and is a Member of The Boston Club.
