"Top Ten Trends in Philanthropy: A Conversation with Stacy Palmer"
May 18, 2011 - Program Summary
WID's Spring Event and Annual Meeting took place on May 18, 2011, at the Colonnade Hotel in Boston. Those in the packed ballroom enjoyed a delicious lunch while conducting a few pieces of WID business and presenting the Young Philanthropist Award and Young Volunteer Award to three young people who are making a difference in the nonprofit world.
Stacy Palmer, Editor of The Chronicle of Philanthropy, then took the stage and offered the keynote address entitled, "Top Ten Trends in Philanthropy Today." One trend Ms. Palmer mentioned was not surprising, but certainly eye-opening: The number of people not giving to charity has doubled in the past year, from 6% to 12%. What is the biggest reason for this increase? Donors do not know how their money is being used. Ms. Palmer encouraged all development professionals to do a better job of painting a clear picture of what donors' gifts can accomplish and the impact donors' philanthropy can have. She shared several other provocative points that were elaborated on during the question and answer session.
