Women in Development: Celebrating A Quarter Century

The Dialogue Committee Presents:

"Movin' In or Movin' On Up: Managing Your Development Career"

Speakers: Betsy Rigby, Director of Development, Partners HealthCare System; Ruth Shuman, Dean for Institutional Advancement, Lasell College

Are you interested in starting a career in development? Do you find yourself wondering about the next steps? Have you been thinking about transitioning into development after a successful career in a different field? Join us on June 22nd and learn about ways you can move into or move up in the field of nonprofit development.

Betsy Rigby and Ruth Shuman will address vital topics such as finding the right job for you, marketing yourself for your next move—through your resume and during the interview, making strategic career moves, and navigating the ever-changing work environment. This presentation will also include a Question & Answer session that will address your concerns and questions about managing your development career. Please bring your questions to the program or e-mail them ahead of time to questions@widgb.org.

Betsy Rigby was recently named the Director of Development with the Partners HealthCare System Development office. For the past four years in the same office, she coordinated the staffing of the development offices across the ten affiliated hospitals in the Partners system, functioning as a strategic advisor on issues of recruitment, retention and professional development. For 14 years prior to Partners, she was a fundraiser with the American Red Cross of Massachusetts Bay, The Medical Foundation, and the League of Women Voters. She has also worked as a fundraising consultant for numerous local non-profits. She was a member of the Board of the Association of Fundraising Professionals for 12 years and has served on the Women in Development Board as well.

Ruth Shuman directs the public relations, communications, development and alumni affairs functions at Lasell College. Prior to joining Lasell in 1998, she served as Associate Dean for External Affairs at Simmons College Graduate School of Management (GSM). Ms. Shuman joined Simmons in 1990 as Director of Career Services where she assisted students with the career exploration and job search process. In addition to individual counseling, she conducted career-related workshops and seminars. She was also a member of the GSM faculty and taught a course in Career Strategies. Ms. Shuman also worked in Career Services at Boston University School of Management and School of Law.
