Women in Development: Celebrating A Quarter Century
The Program Committee Presents:
"The Changing Landscape of Philanthropy in Boston"
Speaker: Paul Grogan is the President and
CEO of the Boston Foundation, one of the largest community
foundations in the nation. Mr. Grogan has served as Vice
President for Government, Community and Public Affairs at
Harvard University, and from 1986 through 1998 was President
and CEO of the nonprofit Local Initiatives Support Corporation
(LISC), the nation's largest community development intermediary.
Under his leadership, LISC raised and invested more than
$3 billion in private capital in inner city revitalization
efforts across the country. Mr. Grogan serves on the boards
of the Knight Foundation, the Community Development Trust
of New York, Williams College, Jobs for Massachusetts and
the Initiative for a Competitive Inner City. He is also
founder and volunteer President of CEOs for Cities, a national
organization comprised of big city mayors, corporate leaders
and university presidents.
The Big Dig has given downtown Boston more than a better
view, it has given the area's residents and business leaders
a clearer way to see each other. A glance at the Boston
Globe will reveal a heady time of new connections, initiatives,
and creative opportunities. Where is it all headed? And
what about the philanthropic landscape within this new Boston?
The insular world of old money and Boston-based corporations
is gone, and dozens of new nonprofits, individual donors,
family foundations, partnerships and government entities
are now gazing at each other with questioning eyes. Where,
exactly, are we headed?
Please join us for breakfast with Paul Grogan as he explores
Boston's new philanthropic landscape and what it means to
us as development professionals. Mr. Grogan will offer a
brief historical perspective of philanthropy in Boston;
then focus on the new trends and challenges organizations
face from individual donors, corporations, foundations,
and government sources, and how nonprofits can anticipate
and overcome these challenges in order to stay ahead of
the curve.
