City Service 2003-04 Applicant Profile

Name: Sportsmen's Tennis Club

Mission:

Sportsmen's Tennis Club provides high-quality, affordable tennis and academic support programs for the children of Boston and has been a safe haven for the children of Boston's communities for more than 40 years.

History, Goals, & Achievements:

STC is a 44-year-old black-owned and operated indoor tennis club. STC has served more than 80,000 children. As a nonprofit, it has been successful in surviving the changing financial climate.
Programs & Services: STC provides tennis instruction and academic support to students between the ages of four and 18. STC offers special programming to address issues of education, health and fitness, social issues, and children's literacy issues.
Annual Budget: $700,000
Staff: Four full-time, 20 part-time; fundraising volunteers as needed
Board: 11; meets once a month; 3-4 committees include Financial, Nominating, Search (ad hoc), and Fundraising
Fundraising: Annual gala; 2 membership drives per year; Board is very active in fundraising
Donor Base: Members, friends of STC, parents of children enrolled in STC's programs, alumni, corporations and small businesses
Fundraising Challenges: Database development
Consultant Needs: STC has realized in the past year that their database (they currently use Access) is not sufficient for the organization's growing needs; a consultant who understands Access and is familiar with other, more advanced programs will benefit the organization. STC also seeks a consultant who can help the staff better tap into existing resources for fundraising purposes. For example, STC's gala in 2002 brought in 1200 guests, 700 more than anticipated; the organization must work to keep these 1200 potential donors energized.
