City Service 2003-04 Applicant Profile

Name: Filmmakers Collaborative, Inc.

Mission:

A nonprofit association of Boston-based independent documentary filmmakers, FC, Inc. supports the production of independent documentaries that increase public understanding and dialogue about social, cultural, racial, historical, political and environmental issues. FC, Inc. also works to educate and inform the public about documentary films and the filmmaking process.

History, Goals, & Achievements:

Founded in 1986 by Michal Goldman, FC, Inc.'s original purpose was to create a fiscal sponsor for independent filmmakers. As such it oversees grants without charging filmmakers exorbitant and sometimes prohibitive fees. The goals include bringing high-quality film and video programming to underserved Boston audiences, engaging audiences in lively discussions about film and filmmaking, and increasing access to a broad range of programming. FC, Inc. currently offers three award-winning outreach programs.
Programs & Services: Film Talks brings diverse films to underserved audiences; Filmmakers Open Studios is a free annual event opening greater Boston studios to the public; and Film Works is a hands-on video making program for underserved youth.
Annual Budget: Expenses: $100,532; Income: $104,068
Staff: 2 part-time; 1 fundraising volunteer
Board: 5; meets 2-3 times a year
Committees: Fundraising/Board Development; Filmmakers Collaborative Member Recruitment
Fundraising: Special events; planning a direct mail solicitation; Board is increasing its fundraising involvement; grants; earned income (4-5% of filmmakers' grants)
Donors: Very few, mostly friends and relatives
Fundraising Challenges: Building a donor base; planning with direct mail; special event advice; cultivating appropriate Board members
Consultant Needs: FC, Inc. hopes to engage its Board in taking on more fundraising responsibilities. Additionally, the organization is exploring Board member cultivation and the development of a nominating process and term limits, so a consultant with Board development experience would be beneficial. Further aid could come from a consultant with strategic planning experience who can help the organization in the development of realistic, feasible strategies to raise money.
